How to Find Divorce Records in Alabama

Sadly, in this day and age, about ? of all marriages will end in divorce. This means that whatever county this divorce happens in will have to maintain and store the records for all of these divorces. While the state mandates what needs to be on the actual divorce records, it’s the job of the county to keep track of them so you should start your search there. The county courthouse is usually the best place to begin your search and a call to the clerk of court’s office will let you know how to start this process and what they require from you.

If you are unsure of the actual county the divorce was finalized in, you have a couple of different options available. You can begin by finding out if Alabama has a state repository that will have every divorce in the state on file and they can direct you to a specific county. If they don’t have a repository, you are going to have to go county by county which can be quite time consuming.

One of the fastest methods to obtain divorce records is to do a search for both current and past spouses. This search will usually give you detailed information such as the last known address for any spouses, present and past. Once you get a hold of this, you can easily find out what county the divorce took place in and contact the courthouse in that county.

When you get a copy of the divorce, it will almost always have the following information: Husband and wife’s full name (including maiden name), the county in which the divorce was finalized, the exact date of the divorce, and the identification number of the document itself. Occasionally, you will get a list with the number of any minors living with the couple at the time of the divorce as well.

When sending in your request, you will have to include whatever fee may be required to conduct this search. In most states it’s less than $15. In addition to the fee, you will have to include as much personal information about the people you are requesting information about. Make sure you use full names, accurate addresses, and as much additional information as you possibly can. This ensures the search goes smoothly and you get results in a timely manner.
