• Lawyer A. Bellettieri ripped off more than 20 million dollars from a bank and used the money to pay for vacation property, a family wedding and generous employee salaries, authorities said. He pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to counts of bank fraud and mail fraud.
• A jury convicted attorney Howton for an incident with a fast-food worker. Howton was charged with two counts each of reckless endangerment and simple assault, and four counts of disorderly conduct in connection with the standoff outside the Long John Silver’s. • Civil rights lawyer L. Stewart was convicted for enabling Omar Abdel-Rahman to communicate with followers despite demands that he be isolated from the world. Her sentencing hearing was set for Monday.
• A lawyer jailed for stealing or misappropriating more than $3.5 million from clients has been granted parole. Ronald Williams, of Devonport, was jailed for 6 1/2 years after pleading guilty to stealing in 2003. His crimes were described as ”appalling breaches of trust” against members of his family and deceased estates.
• A prosecutor asked for federal prison time for a lawyer who bilked his elderly clients of millions of dollars. He abused their trust by misappropriating $1.7 million of his elderly clients’ money. Yes lawyers are people. People with more access to other people’s money than the average person. You need to know if the lawyer you just hired as the trustee of your estate has a theft conviction.
